About Pagėgiai region

Pagėgiai municipality, located on 54 000 ha land plot, was established in 1999. The municipality consists of 5 sub-districts (Lumpėnai, Natikiškiai, Pagėgiai, Stoniškiai, Vilkyškiai), where there are 101 villages. The population of Pagėgiai Municipality is approximately 10 000 people.

The geographical position of the municipality is strategically good, as it shares exterior border of the European Union with Kaliningrad Oblast. The territory of Pagėgiai Municipality is crossed in the North - South-western direction by an international Via HANSEATICA corridor Saint Petersburg - Šiauliai – Tauragė – Karaliaučius that is important in respect of urban axes of the Republic of Lithuania, Tauragė Region and Pagėgiai municipality. Pagėgiai municipality has direct roads to the national coastal region, national road Klaipėda - Šilutė – Pagėgiai – Jurbarkas – Kaunas No. 141. The Nemunas River that flows along the southern border of the municipality from Kaliningrad Oblast approx. 40 km provides opportunities for the development of river navigation and tourism. Pagėgiai state border protection team was established in 1994. The team protects 178 km-long state border with the Russian Federation, 109 km out of which are along the Nemunas River.

Pagėgiai municipality is an agricultural region that cherishes dairy and meat product processing traditions. Agricultural land makes 70.5 percent of the total territory. Two large companies - AB Vilkyškių pieninė and UAB Vilkė, as well as two model agricultural cooperatives, i.e. Piktupėnų Javas and Lumpėnų Rambynas, are operating in the territory of the municipality.

Tourism is another economic activity that is a priority in the municipality. Pagėgiai Municipal Administration and a local activity group “Pagėgių kraštas” initiate and implement quite a number of projects, related to the development and improvement of tourism infrastructure. There are 11 companies providing various tourism services in the municipality. Public Institution Pagėgiai Region Tourism Information Centre, Pagėgiai Municipal Martynas Jankus’ Museum, Pagėgiai Municipal Cultural Centre, Rambynas Regional Park Authority and Visitor Centre also contribute to the supply of tourism services and to the ensuring of the high quality of tourism services. The number of local tourists is growing in Pagėgiai municipality every year.
